Days 86 to 88 | Our New Routine
Days 86-88, March 24-26, Brasov—In a way, these past few days have been like a dream come true. Since having kids, I’ve had the desire to get a taste of what homeschooling my kids would be like. When we decided we would be taking this trip I was really excited about the “homeschool” part of it. Until this week, we’ve been so busy out seeing things that we’ve only fit a little school work in here and there when we’ve had time. I haven’t wanted to get too stressed about it because they are learning so much through our travels.
But this week, since we’ve been home everyday, I knew we needed to have a routine that included some basic school stuff. So, I wrote out a basic daily routine, got everyone’s opinions on it, and we put it into action. We’ve done it four days and I’m so glad it’s working well. We’ll see how long it lasts. Haha!
One thing the girls have really enjoyed is “research time.” They can’t wait to get to that part of the day. They each chose a topic to research. Then they wrote down what they know and what they want to know about the topic. After that, they researched the questions they wanted to know about (using internet, videos, and digital books). Then they organized their information to make a digital photo book with all the info they have on their topic. We are using the Shutterfly app.
This is a great thing to do for any age and it helps teach and reinforce so many skills. And if you order a book, you have a fun keepsake! So far we have made books about rainforest animals, Frank Lloyd Wright, and horses.
I think everyone is happier with a routine. I even scheduled time I can use for myself to read, watch a show on my own, or take a nap! And I don’t feel guilty about it! I should have done this a long time ago!
